The Guitar The guitar is a plucked string instrument that may be played with a plectrum (pick) or the fingers and natural or artificial nails. Traditionally, the instrument was said to be a development of the lute or the ancient Greek kithara. Physical chemist, Dr. Michael Kasha proved otherwise; his findings point to early string instruments such as bowl harps and tanburs as the ancestors of the guitar.
Traditionally, the guitar has been constructed using various woods framed in a hollow body using a variety of bracing philosophies with a round sound hole. Today, the guitar is built using various shapes and sizes, more diversity of woods, construction techniques, and styles from deep traditional hollow body to thin hollow and solid bodies. Some guitars modern use polycarbonate materials in their constructions. Guitars may be totally acoustic in nature or built with electric pickups for sound amplification.
Early acoustic guitars such as the Flamenco and Classical guitars were strung with animal gut. Today, thanks to technology, modern guitars use nylon, steel, copper, silver, and even carbon fibers. The three low strings are usually suited with either flat or round wound strings.
